Becoming a foster family in Guyana means providing a safe home for a child in need through the Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA). Applicants are assessed, trained and supervised by the Agency under the Childcare and Development Services Act. Holding a current first-aid and CPR certificate is widely expected as part of caring for a child in your home.

Foster care in Guyana is managed by the Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA) within the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, under the Childcare and Development Services Act 2011; applicants complete an assessment, background checks and preparation before a child is placed. While the published criteria centre on suitability and the home assessment, a recognized first-aid and CPR certificate is commonly expected so a carer can respond to everyday emergencies — injuries, choking, an unresponsive child — including CPR for children and infants.
Where required, the certificate is recognized by the CPA and kept current through periodic renewal. It is one element of caregiver readiness that supports — and does not replace — the home study, background checks and the demonstrated ability to care for a child.
